Frequently Asked Questions

Can I join UTS if I’m not a drama major?

ABSOLUTELY! UTS is home to plenty of non-drama majors!

What if I've never done theater before?

Any skill level is welcome for both acting and being a part of the production team. There are plenty of opportunities and resources to help you learn as you go.

When are your meetings?

We have board meetings that are open to everyone on Wednesdays at 10:30 PM and we generally have town halls at the end of every month. We also have various committee meetings during the week. Look on the calendar for upcoming town halls.

Is UTS the same as School of Drama?

No, we are separate from the School of Drama and the BA Council. We have a very close relationship, though!

How many opportunities are there to get involved?

Tons! You can be in a show, be on the production team for a show, learn skills in workshops, direct, door hold for a show, be on a committee for the board, do improv, write plays, be a part of the board and so much more! If you're interested in anything in theatre, reach out to us and we'll find a place for you! Check our Get Involved  page for more information on current opportunities!

I don’t think I have time to participate in a production but I still want to be involved!

Crew is a really great low-commitment way to get involved with a show! We're always looking for light and sound board ops! You can also stay involved by participating in UTS's workshops, UTS Improv or Karen's Secret Army!

Do you have an improv group?

Yes! UTS Improv meets every Monday from 4 pm to 6 pm in Hutchinson Hall 211. It is a drop-in group where you are encouraged to try new things! No experience in theatre or improv is expected or required!

What if I am a playwright?

If you are a playwright, this is the perfect time to get involved with UTS! Starting this season, we are producing 3 full length New Work plays. We also have a playwright group, Karen's Secret Army, that meets regularly and does staged readings. Email creative@uwuts.org for more info on any of this!

What if I want to direct?

Directing applications for each season go out the the Spring. To direct, you have to fill our a Directing application and do an interview with the UTS Board. You can contact production@uwuts.org with questions about this process!

How do I get involved in directing if I have no experience?

Anyone with any level of experience can apply to direct for UTS and will be considered. We always recommend assistant directing as a way to get to know UTS's process and many UTS directors are excited about taking on assistants!

How can I hear about UTS related opportunities?

Sign up for our ListServ! It can be found at the bottom of the page or talk to a board member.
